Timeline:
1933- Ishmael Armstrong buys the Krispy Kreme name, recipe, and doughnut shop from French chef Joe LeBeau. He hires his 18-year-old nephew, Vernon Rudolph to sell doughnuts door-to-door.
1935-Ishmael Armstrong sells his business to Vernon Rudolph’s father, Plumie Rudolph.
Summer of 1937- Vernon Rudolph and three friends set off in hopes of starting their own doughnut business.
July 13, 1937- Vernon Rudolph makes the first batch of Krispy Kreme doughnuts at their shop on Main Street in Winston-Salem
1938- Vernon Rudolph and an uncle open a second store in Charlotte, North Carolina. They start making pies and other pastries.
1941-Vernon Rudolph opens a third shop in Charleston, West Virginia.
1946- Krispy Kreme is registered as a trademark with the US Patent Office.
October 1, 1946- Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company is incorporated in North Carolina. They take control of seven other doughnut shops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
June 3, 1947- The new corporation will manufacture the dry mixes to make the doughnuts, in addition to buying, selling, and manufacturing doughnut-making equipment and bakery supplies.
1948- Krispy Kreme develops a mix department on Ivy Avenue in Winston-Salem. Still used today. Later expands in 1949 to make their own equipment.
1949- Krispy Kreme opens a laboratory to test ingredients and provide control over quality.
1951- Vernon Rudolph builds a brand-new model Krispy Kreme in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.
1952- Opens a doughnut shop with a coffee bar in Tampa, Florida.
1954- Krispy Kreme decided to open coffee bars in all their shops.
1955-A new artist is hired to revamp the Krispy Kreme logo and the colors red and green are set as the company’s official colors.
1955- Orders come in from churches, clubs, and school to sell doughnuts through the Krispy Kreme fund-raising program.
1959- All the stores are redesigned so the Krispy Kreme stores all have a unified design.
1970’s- The Hot Doughnuts Now sign is developed.
August 16, 1973-Founder Vernon Rudolph passes away and Krispy Kreme is held in trust by a bank for nearly three years.
May 28, 1976- Beatrice Foods of Chicago, Illinois buys Krispy Kreme and changes the signature doughnut recipe.
1981- Beatrice Foods puts Krispy Kreme up for sale.
February 28, 1982- Joseph A. McAleer buys Krispy Kreme for $22 million and returns back to the original doughnut recipe.
May 9, 1995- Krispy Kreme opens its first store outside the Southeast in Indianapolis, Indiana.
June 26, 1996- Krispy Kreme opens its first store in New York City.
July 17, 1997- For the 60th celebration, Krispy Kreme is inducted into the Smithsonian Institution.
January 26, 1999- Krispy Kreme opens first store in California.
2000-Krispy Kreme enters into the stock world and raises $65.7 million.
December 11, 2001- Krispy Kreme opens its first international store in Mississauga, Ontario.
May 12th, 2003- Krispy Kreme selects Grupo AXO to open 20 stores over the next 6 years in Mexico.
June 19, 2003- Krispy Kreme opens the first store in Australia.
