Krispy Kreme in Winston-Salem and North Carolina
People throughout Winston-Salem and North Carolina not only know Krispy Kreme, but they grew up with the famous doughnuts. North Carolinians talk about their experiences with Krispy Kreme from the time they were children to the times with their own children. One such case was that of Nancy Gates, where every year for Christmas there was “a Krispy Kreme box filled with fresh doughnut” (Kazanjian & Joyner, 2004). Another North Carolinians experience was with Congressman Mel Watts, where he remembers taking dates to Krispy Kreme in the early 1970’s (Kazanjian & Joyner, 2004). Watts states, “There used to be people lined up at two or three o’clock in the morning. Even in a city the size of Charlotte, that was the only place where you cloud get them hot off the line” (Kazanjian & Joyner, 2004) These are the types of experiences Krispy Kreme wants people to have, so that they keep returning for years to come.
Krispy Kreme is not only known for their delicious doughnut, but also for helping the community around each store. Krispy Kreme provides fundraising opportunities for local groups to sell doughnuts and keep 50 to 60 percent of the profits. (4 WAYS TO RAISE FUNDS, 2013) They also sponsor local charities in North Carolina, such as Victory Junction, which is a camp for children with disabilities.
When Krispy Kreme celebrated its sixty-fifth anniversary they came back to where it all started, Old Salem. They celebrated by breaking a Guinness world record by building the world’s largest doughnut cake, made of 14,832 doughnuts. (Kazanjian & Joyner, 2004) Then again when the company celebrated seventy-five years in 2012 the company planned various activities that summer, including two community events — a street party in the downtown area July 13 and a Family Fan Fest at Old Salem on July 14. (DANIEL, 2010)
